Vote Bill Wolpert

October 11 Email – Argus Courier Rebuttal Coming Soon

My name is Bill Wolpert.  I’m running for Petaluma City Council.  And this is another installment of my continuing conversation with the voters of Petaluma.

I assume many readers here also read the local newspaper, the Argus Courier.  I don’t always agree with the editorial board, but I encourage reading the paper.  It’s a good way to keep up on local events.  And we all need to be sometimes exposed to positions with which we disagree.  It’s part of learning to be good citizens.

Last week’s edition of the Argus Courier covered the City Council race.  There were solid, competent articles on all four candidates, the three incumbents and me.  I thought the writer did a fine job of identifying the skills and experience that each of us could bring to the Council.

After thoroughly reading the four articles, I flipped with anticipation to the endorsements on the editorial page.  I was quickly dismayed.  The three incumbents were lauded with often dubious claims that felt excerpted from the website the three share.  After the effusive and frequently undeserved praise for the others, I was dismissed with a couple of curt paragraphs at the end as unqualified.

I was disappointed and puzzled.  It was as if the articles and the editorial had been written by different newspaper staffs.

So I did what all of us should do more often.  I called the Argus Courier and complained.  It resulted in a good conversation and a commitment to run a rebuttal by me, which I submitted yesterday.

I won’t tell you what I wrote.  That wouldn’t be fair to the Argus Courier staff who graciously agreed to hear me out.

But I want you to be aware of the coming rebuttal.  This Thursday, I want all of you to grab your copies of Argus Courier and to turn eagerly to the editorial section.  I think you’ll like what I have to say.

Bill Wolpert

Candidate, Petaluma City Council
